White-out

First snow of 2011 and it's a doozy. The newly-Mainer in me watched the Weather Channel last night and scoffed, "What's 6-10 inches? The boys will definitely be able to go to school tomorrow!" But when we woke up this morning, it was clear we weren't going anywhere. Those weathermen under-called this one, and with some crazy wind gusts (and the help of the snow plow), there are drifts of 4 feet or more. I tried to bring the boys over to a neighbor's after their naps - wow, that was a challenge. Picture me walking through lots and lots of snow, holding one boy on my hip, dragging the other by a dangling mitten as he tries his very hardest to walk through snow up to his neck, but not without a lot of whining (could you blame him?). Fun times. We did manage to get out a bit this morning before the snow depths got too unmanageable.
Not sure when sunglasses became part of the snow shoveling uniform, but Ethan insisted on wearing his today. And what big monkey wants, little monkey wants.
It's interesting, this winter - Ethan is on cloud nine out there in the snow and Adam, well, he could take it or leave it. At the first sight of snow, Ethan cannot get his gear on fast enough (which he can now do unassisted, I might add!). And he would stay out there forever if I let him, shoveling, of course, but also jumping around in the snow, building forts for his bulldozers, and just laying there, letting the flakes fall on his face. It's actually kind of magical watching how joyful and free Ethan is playing in the snow. Adam, on the other hand, likes the snow in theory but just stands there with his arms reaching up to me saying "Hold me, hold me". This usual daredevil is oddly wary of the fluffy white stuff. Part of the issue is that the kid refuses to keep his mittens on. Now, I understood and expected this last year, but come on now - he's two! Shouldn't SOME reason come into play here? Doesn't he figure out that no mittens turns into this?
So Adam and I end up going inside, and watching our snow bunny frolic and play from the cozy warmth of our kitchen. I can never bear to put an early end to his joy.

LOVE the sunglasses. That's a great idea! And today with the blowing snow you kind of needed them! Craziness here as well - schools are even closed tomorrow - but we only got about 20 inches. Plenty for Needham but only knee deep! :-) We had such fun playing in it this afternoon though - Hannah stayed out for two hours and she finally, now that she's 3!!, kept her mittens on the entire time. So there's hope for Adam!

Same here -- took until age 3 for Molly to keep her mittens on and now it's Jack we are doing battle with. I do agree with you about the magic of watching kids play in the snow, it's really fun. I think Ethan and my mom are kindred snow spirits -- the more there is, the happier their hearts.

Oliver and Adam are much the same - no mittens and not totally thrilled about the snow.
