Baby Booking

People often ask me why I have a blog. And the truth is, I have many reasons. I do it for the grandparents, who cannot possibly see Ethan and Adam enough and need to constantly check the blog for hits in between visits. I do it to keep in touch with my friends who live too far away, so we can swap stories and pictures and so our kids don't forget each other. I do it to reflect on this parenthood experience while it's happening, instead of looking back from the future and trying to remember what it was like. But most of all, I do it for my boys, so that they may have a record of their childhood, told through the eyes of their mom, to read and enjoy when they're all grown up. So in addition to capturing all the weekly happenings and activities, I like to occasionally record just a few tidbits about Ethan and Adam at ___ and ____ (insert ages).

Ethan just had his half birthday so he is now closer to FOUR than three. This is unbelievable to me in some ways, but in other ways, he does seem so grown up. He made my heart melt the other night at dinner when he said "Mommy, thanks for making this. It's really good." To understand that I had worked on dinner, made it for him to enjoy, and to reflect on that and thank me just seemed like a very adult gesture, and it made up for every single time he's said "Mommy, this is not good" when sitting down to dinner. Always our little rule follower, Ethan is very interested in pleasing Mommy and Daddy, is a fabulous helper around the house, and is developing a great set of manners. He is most aggressive with his baby brother, whom he likes to wrestle with and grab toys from, but he is equally watchful, protective, and attentive. Whenever Adam is cranky, Ethan asks if he needs a hug, or to hold hands, or his horsey, and offers to share his toys or snacks. We often look back in the car to find the two of them holding hands. Ethan is certainly pushing towards four with a fierce sense of independence and self-sufficiency. He is proud of all that he can do himself, and gets frustrated when his body won't yet cooperate with his will. But he is still a snuggly mama's boy too - craving love and affection, reassurance and hugs. I'll keep eating that up while it lasts.

Adam just turned 21 months, the same age Ethan was when Adam was born. This is also unbelievable to me. Although still a bundle of energy and a stubborn Scorpio, Adam has mellowed out a bit in the past few weeks, obeying a little more, testing a little less, and just acting generally more mature. He is suddenly talking in full sentences, with a big vocabulary and very good pronunciation. This continues to astound us since Ethan was such a late talker. Adam is a quirky guy, with some really funny habits. For example, he hates having any sort of dirt or crumbs on his feet. For those of you who know me and my penchant for housekeeping, this is a problem. So he likes to wear shoes inside whenever he can. But not two shoes - for some reason, this kid likes just one shoe. Adam also likes to use articles before all his nouns. Most kids his age would hear a plane overhead and say "plane!". Not Adam - he always says "a plane!" or "a tree" or "a blueberry" or "a tractor". And his favorite new thing to say when he's being naughty is "hug", with arms wide open. He learned quickly that this turned Mom and Dad's scowls into smiles and has been working it to his advantage ever since. Like Ethan, Adam is extremely affectionate, but his heart beats hardest for Daddy. I hear "I want Daddy" about 100 times a day, and when he finally gets to see Daddy, he runs at him with such glee and excitement - it's adorable.

With the exception of pretty much constant fighting over toys (why is it that no matter how many toys there are, two kids will always want the same one?!), the boys continue to get along so well. Their relationship is intense and physical, and I can only imagine this will get more so as the years progress. But they are also kind and loving with one another, each other's most steadfast protector. They have their own private relationship, and often seem closer to each other than they are to us. As brothers, I know that they'll have ups and downs, but I hope that they'll always have each other's back.

Enough Already!

At least twice a week, Ben and I have a conversation that goes something like this:

Liz: Did you check out the blog? I put up a new post.
Ben: No. Is it about the garden?
Liz: No, it is about our adorable children and their antics.
Ben: Sigh. Oh. I'll check it out later.

OK, that's probably a bit exaggerated for effect, but you get my drift. Ben has always been a very proud daddy, but he is also a very proud farmer. So to humor him (and get him off my back), some pictures of his beloved garden, which is admittedly quite impressive, in my opinion.

And the yummy food we have enjoyed, thanks to Farmer Ben and his apprentice Ethan:
And to take just a little credit, someone does have to turn all these veggies into delicious meals...
Please feel free to add "oooooos" and "aaaahhhhs" to the comment section. In addition to being Mr. I-Don't-Do-Anything-Halfway, Ben is also Mr. I-Love-Validation-and-Praise. All joking aside, I am proud of our little garden and my dedicated farmer. We've weathered tornadoes, possible blight, cucumber beetles, cutworms, mysterious wilting diseases, and periods of drought, and have still managed to have successful crops. Gardening gives me tremendous respect for farmers who actually try to do this for a living. But it sure is rewarding to plant a seed, nurture it, watch it grow, and then reap the benefits. Kind of like parenthood!

Beachy Keen

This is my kind of summer. Many New Englanders are complaining about the hot and muggy stretch we've had, but I am reveling in every last bit of heat and humidity, trying to store it in my cells for the long winter that will be here before we know it. This is most certainly payback for last summer, when we had maybe ten beach-worthy days, total. This year, it seems, every day is a perfect beach day. And luckily, the boys love the beach almost as much as their mama. They can't get enough of jumping in the waves, collecting seashells (and stinky seaweed), building (Ethan) and knocking down (Adam) sandcastles, wandering on the beach looking for treasures, spotting lobster boats, catching hermit crabs, and eating. Yes, for some reason, the beach brings with it a strong food association for my kiddos, and no matter how many snacks I pack for the beach, they are decimated within minutes of arrival. I guess fun in the sun and surf makes for hungry munchkins.

This past weekend we spent three straight days at the beach - three different beaches, with three different sets of company. The amount of sand that now exists in our car, the boys' beds, and my washing machine is extraordinary. I'm surprised there is any left at the beach, actually. But I don't care - before long, it will be snow and slush we're tracking into the house and we'll wish for some sand between our toes. For now, I'll treasure my time snuggling with my sandy, salty beach bums, warm, happy, and sleepy from the sun.

Our camera isn't very beach-friendly, so I don't have any documentation of our weekend fun. But the wonderful weather also allowed for lots of al fresco dinners, so I'll post some pictures of those instead.
Hooray for summer!

A Few Firsts to Report

For Adam, first time driving the tractor with Daddy:
And first time driving Grandpa's fishing boat:
And just this week Ethan had his first big boy (i.e., Mommy doesn't need to get in the water) swimming lesson (he did so great!). No pictures to record the event (so much for those who say we're better about documenting our first child's firsts than subsequent children's firsts) - maybe I'll bring my camera next week so I can capture the little fish in action.

And for the whole Stockwell family (and particularly Ben the Farmer), our first garden meal of the season! We've had lots of lettuce this spring, but last week we enjoyed our first real feast of garden bounty: beans and beets. Now they're coming in droves (as are the zucchini and summer squash), so we're loving fresh veggies with every meal.

The More the Merrier

Ben and I have always enjoyed sharing Keoka Lake with others. The "Monster Mashes" and guys' weekends of old have been (temporarily?) replaced by quieter (well, that's probably not quite the right term) weekends with one or two families, but they are fun all the same. This past weekend, Katie, Davis, Oliver, and Olivia-in-utero kept us company as we dodged raindrops and partook in fun galore. We bowled (no pictures of that, but let's just say it was very entertaining but surprisingly successful), chillaxed in the swing,
went canoeing,
had cocktails on Stonywood porch,
enjoyed a gorgeous sunset,
celebrated Davis' birthday,
took a ride on Grandpa's boat,
spent lots of time in the water,
and even fixed a bench or two.
Note which kid gets right in there and uses his tools correctly and which kid looks at the screwdriver with complete confusion. I think you can probably guess who's Dad is handier...

Thanks for a great visit, Lee family, and for being such troupers through rainstorms, power outages, and germ outbreaks. We hope you'll forget all that and come back again soon!

Halloween in July

And now for the promised parade recap...

As usual, the Stockwells came out in all their zany, cross-dressing glory for the annual 4th of July parade on Sunday.
And also as usual, we scrambled to throw together our costumes at the very last minute (although a little less so this year, thanks to Jessica). In celebration of the World Cup, we dressed as a cheering section for Team USA. I actually think our costumes came out pretty well, complete with vuvuzelas and all.
We even won the award for Best Group! This is a huge achievement, considering that we usually alternate between "Best Use of Found Materials" and "Trashiest". But given the creativity and preparation of some of the other groups, I'm not sure this top merit was warranted...

Adam was completely overwhelmed and confused (can you blame him?) and refused to participate in our costume. There was a lot of this:
and this:
But Ethan LOVED it all, especially saying the Pledge of Allegiance and singing some patriotic songs on the tennis court.
Doesn't he make a cute little soccer fan?

Boytown

What do you get when you mix four boys under four, some spectacular weather, a setting that can only be described as a kid's (and an adult's, for that matter) dream playground, and our nation's birthday? One heck of a lot of fun, a wee bit of noise, and lots of wonderful memories. Most of you now know that the Stockwells have their own unique way of celebrating the Fourth of July, and there really is nothing like it, anywhere. I'll save pictures of the parade for another post - there is just too much good material there. But here are some other shots from the weekend. We shared one of the cabins with Auntie Gwen and Brian, Jessica, Tony, and Caz, and Grandma and Grandpa. I'm pretty sure Grandma and Grandpa will need to log some serious time at the library or a monastery or some similarly silent location for the next few days - these boys are not the quietest bunch. But boy did they have fun!

Last summer, Grandpa bought this adorable mini picnic table to put on the porch at T'Kozy. I think he envisioned four little boys sitting quietly, enjoying a picnic lunch. The reality is slightly different, but the boys did all sit at the table a lot (just not all at the same time, and definitely not quietly), and we actually got them to sit still for a few seconds so we could take a picture....
before resuming car-play.
