In July of 2008, when Ben and I were touring daycare centers to see where we should send Ethan (and soon-to-be Adam), the Director at Toddle Inn raved about their Pre-K program, and told us all about the fabulous teacher in that room and the very special graduation at the end of the year. At the time, with a toddler who could barely string a few words together, we couldn't really conceptualize the need for kindergarten preparation, and honestly thought the whole idea of a Pre-K graduation was a little silly. But here we are, almost four years later and singing a different tune. Ethan graduated on Thursday, culminating a fabulous year with teachers quite worthy of all the advance billing. He grew so much this year, transforming from a quiet and timid preschooler to an independent and confident almost-kindergartner. I'm sure that some of that change would have occurred on its own, but I am also quite sure that this program was exactly what he needed to prepare him for what's ahead. It's bittersweet, of course, these changes always are. It's hard to watch Ethan say goodbye to all the friends he's made, friends that will scatter to different schools come fall. And it's sad to close this major chapter of his little life, to leave this comfortable, safe, nurturing environment for the unknown. But it's also so very exciting, and this kid couldn't me more ready. Congrats on your first graduation, kiddo. We couldn't be more proud of the little man you've become.
